Volunteers Needed
If you have a skill or a profession and wish to use it in a program like
ours, please contact us and we can tell you quickly if it matches our
program needs. We hold workshops for the parents in our Family Center.
These seminars are popular and span a wide range of subjects, from flower
arranging to anger management. A volunteer runs our sports program for
the children. Another takes photographs. Another is showing the children
how to run their library and providing story hours. Other volunteers provide
more than 21,000 hours of services each year. People even come for extended
periods from France and Belgium to assist us. Call Ana
Seda, if you have a query.

Make a donation to the Peter Pappas Scholarship Fund—or setup a scholarship
in memory of someone you wish to honor
A gift of knowledge is a gift that will last a lifetime. Your contribution
to the Peter Pappas Scholarship Fund will allow one of the youngsters
in our After-School to attend St. Jerome, a nearby parochial school known
for its discipline and tough curriculum.
$2,635 will pay for tuition, a uniform and books for one child for an
entire school year. Your donation—in any amount—will make a huge difference
in the life of one of the kids.
If you would like to establish a scholarship in the name of someone, assuring
a child’s education for a year or throughout 8th grade or high school,
we would be delighted. For example, the Evelyn Grace Koch Scholarship
at Abraham House is ensuring the education of fourth-grader Catalina Aguilar
through the 12th grade.

Contribute Books for the After-School Program
The After-School itself has a small library of approximately 250 used books, donated by private schools. These include fairy tales, fiction, non-fiction, science books (animal facts, earth science, etc.), biographies, etc.
We do not have enough books spanning the age/reading levels of the students from K to 8th grade. It would be a great assistance to have books in all genres across this span and also to obtain books to facilitate and enhance reading skills (decoding, high frequency words, comprehension, higher thinking skills).
Also needed: literature in Spanish to enable and encourage parents to read to and with their children.

Wanted: Sponsors/Mentors to buy small blocks of tickets to movies, plays,
concerts, dance, opera, sporting events (you name it) that will widen the
horizons of our After-School youth, age 5 to 15. Discounted tickets often
are available, but transportation and a hot dog and soda for each child
adds up! If you would like to sponsor an outing and be part of it, contact
Teresa Gomez.
Provide Practical Solutions to Poverty
In the aftermath of September 11, more than 30% of the adults in our Family
Center are unemployed. Most are immigrants from Central and South America.
These men and women worked in places where minimal English suffices, strong
bodies are needed and relatively few questions are asked about your past.
They swept and scrubbed in kitchens and hotels; they washed and parked
cars; they worked on unlicensed crews, as day laborers, seamstresses,
maids and in seasonal trades. They have very basic needs: money to pay
the rent, heat and light; meat to supplement the family diet; blankets,
sweaters and shoes. These families have many children and few of the essentials
of life. Many children do not have beds of their own, and some sleep on
the floor in overcrowded apartments.
Do you have something material you can donate:
- Warm, clean clothing in good condition. Our Clothing Closet is used by 250 families on the weekends.
- Blankets, comforters, sheets, and towels that are clean and usable
- Furniture in good condition
- Children’s necessities: Baby food, formula, Pampers are very expensive for mothers with newborns, and we have more than two dozen relying on us weekly.
- Educational software for the children in the After-School.
Computer Software: e.g., Encarta, Infopedia, Britanica Encyclopedia, Chemistry cd’s, Earth Science, Math games, reading interactive activities. We request these things for all the various age groups ages 3 – 15.
- Bikes or board games for the children and other things that will improve their dexterity and their hand/eye coordination.

Even Shoes are Welcome:
